Monday 01 July Théâtre municipal Discussions Professionals only

Opening talk by Roch-Olivier Maistre, president of the CSA, and a “European drama in 2018” presentation by Nathalie Sonnac, consultant.

President of the CSA, Roch-Olivier Maistre, will be opening this year’s edition of Série Series, followed by board member Nathalie Sonnac’s presentation on “European drama’s performance in 2018”. Since 2009, the CSA has produced yearly TV drama viewer reports (both for series and single movies) for France, the UK, Germany, Spain and Italy. This report is based on viewer data from Médiamétrie and Eurodata TV Worldwide and highlights the viewing specifi cities in each of these fi ve countries.

In 2018, the French drama market, which has previously been very fond of imported series, was largely dominated by local content, just like its European neighbours. When discussing broadcasters, the strongest audience numbers for drama in the UK, Italy and Germany were overwhelmingly on public channels. Which is quite the opposite for France and Spain, where private channels take the lead. As opposed to Germany, new drama has proven to be the most popular in France. In France and Germany, crime drama prevails while Spain and the UK are more diverse in terms of genres.

2019. Jérémy is 32. He lives in Paris. Alone, refusing to belong to the times in which he lives. One night, Jérémy discovers a club, the Wonderland, where guests sing and dance in an old-fashioned rock-and-roll style. Jérémy gives it a chance and becomes a barman. Instead, he falls in love with a woman in a photograph taken in Biarritz in 1960. Inexplicably, this club acts as a portal for Jérémy, a gateway between Paris in 2019 and Biarritz in the 1960s.
Romance is the story of an encounter which shouldn’t have taken place; an amorous, passionate encounter that will turn destinies on their heads and change lives.
A trip through time that is both terrifying and amazing.

Une Belle Histoire tells the story of the crossed, eventful and unpredictable paths of three couples. Three men and three women in search of what is considered happiness when you are young, and balance when you are less so. What must be sacrificed to make a successful marriage? This is the question that is constantly raised, with the light-heartedness of a dramedy, by Une Belle Histoire. In this series, the conjugal path is full of pitfalls, good and bad surprises, misunderstandings that lead to comedy, accidents that lead to tragedies, with friendship as a security blanket.

Masterclass: Isobel Waller-Bridge

Composer - United Kingdom

Isobel Waller-Bridge is a composer and musician for fi lm, television and theatre. Her notable work includes the soundtracks to Vanity Fair, The Split and Fleabag. Isobel brilliantly and eff ortlessly works with orchestral music, electronic sound design, experimental music and songs - for series 2 of Fleabag, she even played around with a religious choir. All the while, her work is signed off  with her instinctively recognisable and decidedly contemporary tone. We are delighted to be able to showcase a young and talented composer like Isobel, who has had such a phenomenal and fascinating career so far. It’s also a superb opportunity for professionals and the public to approach the subject of music’s role within series with Isobel.

Screenwriter and director Cathy Verney, who notably wrote Vernon Subutex and Hard, will discuss the role music has to play in series and how directors and composer collaborate with the talented Isobel.

SACD Debate: Drama In Europe: A Model For France To Emulate?

Europe is a rich and diverse ground for series creation. Each year, it confirms its place as an increasingly dynamic and attractive hub. However, there is no unique European model. Whether it be in terms of financing, the role of government bodies, managing relations between writers and producers or the involvement of televisionand digital platforms, the organisation of drama series depends on national or regional rationale. France is thinking of ways to set up a specific plan to support series and to homogenise new ways of organising creative work. However, it is still important to compare the practices set up in Europe with the current rules used in France.

In the Pipeline: The Trial of Christine Keeler

Written by BAFTA award-winning novelist and screenwriter Amanda Coe (Apple Tree Yard, Room at the Top, Life in Squares) and directed by Andrea Harkin (Come Home, Clique), The Trial of Christine Keeler takes a fresh look at one of the most infamous British stories: the chain of events in the 1960s that came to be known as the ‘Profumo affair’.

At the centre of the storm was 19-year-old Christine Keeler (Sophie Cookson) - a young woman whom the powerful, male-dominated establishment sought to silence and exploit, but who refused to play by their rules. The Trial of Christine Keeler takes us behind the headlines to tell a human story about the sexual and cultural politics of one of the most revealing and iconic stories of modern times.

« The Storytelling Animal: how stories make us human  »

Whether it be in writing, on stage or on screen, humans are decidedly dependent on stories. However, that dependence runs deeper than we might think: it infiltrates every aspect of our lives and thoughts. We dream, fantasise and socialise through stories. Writer and researcher at the crossroads of arts and science, Jonathan Gottschall will immerse us into a dizzying world of thoughts on stories: why do we make them and how do they shape us?

New this year: Série Series and the SACD have joined forces in order to shine a light on new talents, from diverse backgrounds, that have been spotted by associations and residencies supported by the SACD (1000 Visages, Atelier artistes en exil, La Cinéfabrique, La Résidence de la Femis, La Ruche, Talents en courts).

The Série Series editorial committee selects the talent based on their drama series project. These writers are invited to pitch a project in an original event format, inspired by talent shows, on the Fontainebleau Theatre stage. They will be coached by a director and introduced by a video profile. They will then have 1’30 to sell their project to the professionals in attendance!

What about European series on French screens ?

Although still outnumbered on French screens, European series are becoming more and more prevalent in French television and streaming platforms. We will discuss French broadcasters views on these works from across Europe and ask the audience about their interest in them. What do co-productions and regional content bring to the audience, as well as series creators in France? What do we get out of them? How should we broadcast them? Why remake them for local audiences? Buyers, broadcaster, distributors, creators and the public will be sharing their points of view on these questions.

The entire team is coming to Fontainebleau and will share their vision of Danish and European drama and where they position themselves. They’ll detail their strategy, the way they work with creators, in both tradition and online platforms, and their way of relating to all audiences. They will also unveil three new series, with the creators in attendance: When the Dust Settles, Deliver Us and A Family Matter. It’s an insight behind the scenes of a channel that has been a driving force of the resurgence and recognition of European drama with series like Borgen and The Killing, as well as a glimpse into a promising future.

Money cannot remove guilt. Money cannot erase memories. Money cannot change the past. Money cannot replace love. A struggling working-class father accepts a substantial pay-off from a renowned
filmmaker to keep silent about the molestation of his youngest son. The father felt this would enable his family to heal and move on – he was so wrong. Dark Money sees a guilt-ridden dad decide to accept ‘hush money’ rather than drag his family through publicity hell by pressing charges against a celebrity. The series is told from the point of view of the family. We follow their journey, from accepting the money and starting a new life – to the family splintering and the father seeking vengeance for his son.

And the next generation…?

Has the success of international platforms definitively caused a separation between 12-25 year olds and the traditional channels, or is this simply an opportunity for the latter to reinvent both their position and role towards millennials? How can we get closer to younger generations, their habits and perceptions? Broadcasters and creators will share their vision and their experiments in the matter. This discussion will highlight several recent initiatives and concrete examples, from genre series to ultra-realism.

Producers Fleur Winters (Lemming Film, Netherlands) and Filip Hammarström (Palladium Fiction, Sweden) who both have new series aimed at a young audience – respectively Heirs of the Night and Dream -, will be sharing their vision as well as their trials and errors. International coproduction, Heirs of the Night follows the adventures of young 19th century vampires. Dream, a contemporary take on science-fiction, tells the story of teenagers that, with the help of a radioactive rock, are able to see into the future, and even potentially change it.  Are genre series the future of youth drama ?
