Abed Laraqui, research manager at MÉDIAMÉTRIE – EURODATA TV WORLDWIDE, will decipher the trends in television series through a study of the panorama of creation in Europe and with references to the most recent launches. In particular, he will identify the subjects, content and genres that are most popular and on-trend, those that are emerging and ripe for development, the most unmissable and those that are in decline or disappearing. This prospective analysis will highlight, in particular, the new distribution platforms that are bringing down the average age of audiences and using their original creations to deal with themes that are adhering evermore closely to modern reality and contemporary societal issues. Abed will also focus on the innovative initiatives and strategies for other types of screens, notably by presenting the first ratings for4-screen viewing in several European countries.

Code of conduct: courage
Sydney has founded his career on a combination of audacity, ambition and confidence, becoming one of France’s most promising young producers. In producing his first series in 2015, an adaptation of the Harlan Coben novel No Second Chance (Une Chance de trop), he established himself, almost overnight, as part of the audiovisual production landscape in France. Between taking monumental risks and a few strokes of luck, Sydney charted himself an unusual course, becoming a true self-made man, for whom courage remains the key to success – or even to survival.

With the support of
Barbara Emile, the producer, has faced many challenges. For several years, she was at the helm of the cult series EastEnders, developing an innovative writing set-up. The golden age of this series was very much thanks to her proving that expectation and support for talent pays. Barbara Emile has a committed approach to success: a balance between talent and courage. She feels that producers and broadcasters have a responsibility to provide an environment where talent and creativity can thrive. Barbara Emile campaigns for proactive policies, convinced as she is of the importance of encouraging diversity in television ; diversity of faces, of paths and of prospects. For her, diversity, both on and off screen, is a necessity and one of the main challenges when bringing new stories to the screen, based on the world today.
It is a lovely evening in Copenhagen. We are at a restaurant. The door opens. Three silhouettes enter. We hear a volley of shots followed by screams and people trying to flee. There are more shots, and the sound of an explosion. Then silence. Dust is hanging in the air, a table is on its side, a birthday balloon is slowly moving across the floor. This is how Once the dust settles begins. We then cut to three weeks earlier. We meet our eight leading characters in medias res – all taking life for granted. But we know that something is inevitable, and the journeys of our characters become tales of destiny. We see how their lives and fates interweave throughout the season both before and after the attack. Hence there is no us and them, but only us.

It’s been 8 months since a horrible incident took place just off the square in the small town of Buchnov, an ordinary place where everyone knows everyone. Even the small Roma community had its place and kept mostly to itself, integrating with the rest only when needed. But then, a Roma man was beaten to death while a crowd looked on, shouting encouragement to the killer as he died, his body ceremoniously hung from a tree. The killer has been convicted and jailed for the crime, but the emotional wounds he has left behind are still close to the surface for most people in the town. Their collective guilt is palpable. Lukáš, a young filmmaker, has arrived in Buchnov to make a documentary about the Roma, but he soon discovers there are many mysteries here.

Alain Carrazé and Romain Nigita, co-authors of the books Series Anatomy and Les Nouveaux Feuilletonistes
From President Obama watching House of Cards trailers to the humble worker buying the last Game of Thrones in an African medina, it is a huge and almost universal phenomenon.
And yet, who truly knows what goes on behind the scenes of these acclaimed episodes and seasons? Who knows how, from the initial pitch through to release, these precious stories are put together piece by piece, amended, abandoned, then revisited?
Departing from 19 clichés and common misconceptions, Alain Carrazé and Romain Nigita embark upon an unprecedented dissection of the creative machine, and of the industry of contemporary sagas. From The Twilight Zone to Grey’s Anatomy, from Dallas to The Sopranos, and from Friends to the Walking Dead, they recount for us the great story of the 8th art.
In 656 pages and 55 interviews, Alain Carrazé revisits nearly 30 years of interviews with the greatest creators of television series in an unmissable volume. Compiled with the help of Romain Nigita, these scriptwriters and producers are joined by the most noteworthy actors and actresses in the history of television series.
Romain Nigita is a journalist specialising in series who began his career with the magazine Éπsode. As well as being a critique for Mad Movies and a columnist for France Inter, he also directs documentaries on television series.
Creator and co-animator of the cult programme Destination: Séries, magazine director, author of reference volumes including Les Nouveaux Feuilletonistesfor the publisher FANTASK, Alain Carrazé is a renowned specialist in television series.

The public loves drama, both in France and in wider Europe. But before being broadcast and enjoyed, works of drama have to be devised, created, financed, produced and directed. During this long process, public entities, be they territorial collectives or public broadcasters, have a crucial role to play.
Without the involvement of the full range of public services, the diversity of creation would not be what it is today, and many works would not see the light of day.
In an audiovisual landscape that is changing in every country in Europe, how can audiovisual public service groups contemplate the future and forge this partnership with creation and drama? What responsibilities do public services have towards creators? How can they address highly diverse audiences and make sure the full diversity of creation is seen? How can the regions of France, whose capabilities and means have been bolstered, consider the future of their input and support?
Faced with these questions, a panel of creators and professionals, as well as managers of European public services and elected representatives leading new regions in France, will be there to reveal their perspectives and share their reflections.
Discussion chaired by Pascal ROGARD, director general of the SACD

Cyborg body parts, editing DNA, downloading memories, artificial intelligence, space colonization; as the group toys with each of these concepts, EI realizes the darker repercussions of human innovation. Meanwhile Jadus, the host of a popular tv show, preaches to biotechnologically re-engineer humans, what he thinks is the next step in our evolution. As EI gives up her body and mind to the group´s human testing and Jadus amasses a following that the press coin as a novel ‘movement’ defining the 21st century, both of their realities become unsurprisingly yet irrevocably linked.

Following the successes of the projects selected since 2015, Spotlight on trailers by Série Series is back for a season 3!
Spotlight on trailers by Série Series is a competition open to all European creators with a project for a series, who are seeking visibility as well as partners to make it happen. The principle: create a trailer of less than 2 minutes, presenting the project. Around ten of these will be selected and screened before every screening during the festival and also during a special session. The selection of trailers will be revealed in June.
New: this year, Série Series is joined by La Fabrique des Formats, which will fund to the tune of 50 000€ two of the ten projects selected by the editorial committee. La Fabrique des Formats, is a service company on the format market (surveys, training and expertise) for companies and professionals in the audiovisual and digital sectors and investment fund.
Lele Marchitelli, a self-taught musician from Rome, has been working as a composer for different media since the end of the eighties, from movies to television, via music creation for plays as well. During his masterclass, Lele will underline the great value of music creation in drama and series, in particular through his work on the TV series The Young Pope alongside Paolo Sorrentino, with whom he also worked on the oscar-awarded La Grande Bellezza. The score plays a major role in Sorrentino’s work, with a balance between holy music and popular tracks and Lele’s was able to reproduce the atmosphere of the series in his unique and striking compositions, echoing this both colourful and disenchanted universe. Lele Marchitelli will provide us with an insight into his working methods and musical choices, including his collaboration on The Young Pope.

The human race has never experienced so many disruptions in such a short time and in so many domains at once. The world we were born into has disappeared; the one we will grow old in does not yet exist; the one we live in is in a constant state of metamorphosis. To awaken our consciences, it is vital that we understand what factors are in play, that we analyse even the smallest signs and sketch out the scenes of the future.
What is meant by courage, when speaking of the future, is the courage not to give in to the vulgate: the “back in the good old days” on the one hand, and blissful technophilia on the other. But how can we truly grasp topics that are still very seldom raised, without simply producing a caricature of the issues of the future? How can we reconstruct a utopia without ignoring the present?

Doing Drama - Dangerously
Facing challenges, working within a large and complex organization, Ruth Caleb knows that it takes courage to fight for one's beliefs. Depicting herself as a « war baby », raised with a strong political awareness, her life has been beset with obstacles : going to university ? Doing politics ? Acting ? Following her father’s advice, « if you do not go to university it will be a decision you will regret all your life », a decision she made and never regretted, she found what drives her heart : challenging the orthodoxy, believing in oneself and compromising when needed.
In her One Vision, Ruth Caleb will go in depth into her passion, her belief in the huge power of television drama, the support she received and what led her to produce challenging, fact-based and controversial content such as Care, A Short Stay in Switzerland, or even dangerous : England Expects and the film Bullet Boy, for which she had to be given protection.

“I left school with the ambition to be an actress, or Prime Minister - and I wanted to change the world!” Ruth Caleb’s life path has changed a bit since then, but changing the world is still what she has been working on, as a BBC producer. During her masterclass, Ruth Caleb will tell us her unique story: from her first step in « the court of the Medicis », the BBC, to her Lifetime Achievement Awards and her Order of the British Empire.
11:30-13:00: The serial experience by Nicola Lusuardi
Having deciphered "The Serial Revolution", Nicola Lusuardi invites Series Stories participants to consider the serial experience more specifically through the diversity of relationships between writers. The writers' role is multi-faceted: from a lonely experience to a writers' room, from showrunning to head writing, from a one-shot contribution to full involvement from start to finish... These various roles of the writers will be studied throughout Nicola Lusuardi's analysis, but also through participants' personal experiences, points of view and methods, which they will be invited to share with their peers.
MediaXchange and Série Series are collaborating in the launch of Creative Vision Workshops as part of the “Series Stories” day, an innovative portfolio of workshops specifically designed for European drama creators, writers and producers. The aim is to create added value for screenwriters, directors and producers, and help them develop their skills, build up solid creative teams and gain a deeper understanding of how to succeed on the European and global TV drama market.

An invitation to a more intimate type of masterclass with two creators of long-running series. No recipes, no techniques, just the secrets of two writers who have had to live with their characters continually for several years. What impact do these fictional beings have on their own families? What space do they occupy on a daily basis? How do they put up with the pressure of an up-coming new season? The occasional weariness, the energy required, the feeling of emptiness when it’s all over, a whole host of subjects to be discussed, that call for secrets to be revealed...
A discussion with Anne Landois (screenwriter, Spiral - 48 episodes) and Frédéric Krivine (screenwriter, The Line, 72 episodes) and chaired by Philippe Triboit (screenwriter and director, The Line La Commune, Ouro).

Olivier Broche, actor and programmer for War on Screen festival, in collaboration with Philippe Bachman, CEO and Artistic Director of War on Screen festival
Representing a conflict on screen is a risk: the risk of interpretating unsuccessfully the reality experienced by the actors and victims in the conflict; the risk of taking sides, or of producing too distant a representation; the risk of falling into the commonplace, sensationalism and pathos. Another risk is that of shocking viewers, or else failing to engage them and inspire further curiosity. And yet, from comedies to spy films, from science fiction to historical saga via social drama, filmmakers have never ceased to cover conflicts, either directly or implicitly. Actor and producer Olivier Broche, proposes taking a look at these artists and their work, particularly through the theme of courage, so as to better grasp the human, political, military, social or economic motives at play behind conflicts and their representation on screen.
Pierre Sérisier is the autor of L'Empire de la mélancolie - L’univers des séries scandinaves
Borgen, The Killing, Lillyhammer, The Bridge… Over the past few years, Scandinavian series have established themselves as a major phenomenon. Admired and recreated abroad, they combine unique aspects of Nordic societies with the familiarity of universal themes (liberty, integration, feminism) and are widely viewed as high-end television. This unprecedented analysis will provide the keys to understanding the phenomenon.
Pierre Sérisier is a journalist who since 2008 has been running the blog “Le Monde des Séries”(LeMonde.fr), which has become a point of reference in the subject. Co-author of “Sériescopie: guide thématique des séries télé” (2011), one of his most notable publications is Le Prisonnier: sommes-nous tous des numéros? (2013).
An epic saga following the characters through the post-war decades. A time of change. The new society based on Democracy, Welfare State and the Individual. All these changes in the big world will be mirrored by the small world of the restaurant and the family. We follow dramatic events and the ups and downs via relationships between family and staff.
